JCCU Launches First MSC-certified Tuna Product under CO・OP Brand

2025.06.03

On May 1, 2025, JCCU launched the CO・OP Bigeye Tuna Cut-Off Pieces(sashimi, or raw sliced fish), marking the first CO・OP Brand product to use MSC-certified tuna. The product was made available for trial through the home delivery services of selected consumer co-ops. MSC certification signifies adherence to sustainable fishing practices that meet the rigorous standards set by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC).

CO・OP Bigeye Tuna Cut-Off Pieces
These are trimmings from large bigeye tuna (weighing over 40 kg), known for their rich flavor and high-quality flesh. The tuna are caught using the longline fishing method (haenawa), which employs a single extended line equipped with multiple hooks. The cut-off pieces are generated during the processing of the tuna into sashimi or fillets, making use of portions that are often overlooked yet still offer excellent taste and texture.

To promote sustainable fishing practices, JCCU has been advancing its initiative for "Ethical Consumption for the Oceans". In May 2021, it established the "2030 Goals for CO・OP Brand Products", which set a goal of ensuring that by 2030, more than 50% of CO・OP products using seafood as a primary ingredient, including those products developed outside the seafood department, carry certified seafood eco-labels. As of March 2025, the share of such eco-labeled products had reached 17.0%. As part of this policy, JCCU has also been expanding its lineup of CO・OP Brand Products bearing the MSC "blue eco-label". By March 2025, the number of MSC-labeled products had grown to 70 items.

MSC "blue eco-label"

According to the 2024 FAO White Paper on World Fisheries and Aquaculture, sustainable marine resources have declined to 62.3%.  This decline is primarily due to overfishing and other forms of over-exploitation, which have risen to 37.7%.  In fisheries production, it is essential to accurately assess the status of marine resources and manage them appropriately. Expanding the adoption of MSC certification contributes to the protection of ocean resources. Displaying the MSC "blue eco-label" on CO・OP products allows consumers to recognize that these products are produced with consideration for marine resource conservation and environmental sustainability.

JCCU will continue to focus on the development and promotion of products that are environmentally and socially responsible.
