CO・OP Kyosai "Pre-Birth Application" Surpasses 50,000 Applicants, Earning Strong Support
2026.07.09
The CO・OP Kyosai "Tasukeai" Pre-Birth Application Program, launched by the Japan CO・OP Insurance Consumers' Co-operative Federation(CO・OP Kyosai), has continued to grow steadily since applications opened in September 2024. In just 20 months, the cumulative number of applicants surpassed 50,000, reaching this milestone by May 2026.
"Pre-Birth Application" is a program that allows parents to apply for insurance coverage for their child during pregnancy, regardless of the child's health condition, provided the pregnancy is less than 22 weeks for either a singleton or twin pregnancy.
Because coverage begins on the day the child is born, the program provides protection from the very moment of birth. Pregnancy is often accompanied by concerns about the baby's health and childbirth, but the ability to secure coverage before the baby is born has been highly valued for the peace of mind it offers. As a result, the program has gained widespread support, particularly among families raising young children.
In addition, the program requires the mother, who becomes the policyholder for the child's coverage, to enroll in insurance herself. This allows coverage for pregnancy and childbirth related risks, such as threatened preterm labor and Caesarean section. The ability to provide insurance protection for both mother and child from the pregnancy stage is another key reason why the program has been widely supported by families.
In April 2026, a web-based survey was conducted among users of the program who had completed the post-birth enrollment procedures. The survey received responses from 78 participants and achieved a high average satisfaction rating of more than 4.5 out of 5. Respondents reported that the program provided both financial and emotional support before and after childbirth by reducing anxiety about delivery and helping them prepare for unexpected hospitalization and medical expenses, among other benefits.
Going forward, CO・OP Kyosai will continue to develop and improve its insurance products based on its guiding principle of "developing and nurturing the insurance products that members themselves need." By listening closely to the voices of its members, the organization will continue to enhance its products and provide even better insurance coverage.
