Co-op Oita Supports Ukrainian Refugees

2022.09.13

On July 10, Mr. Sergiy Vladimirovich Korsunsky, the Ambassador of Ukraine to Japan, visited the Co-op Beppu store in Oita Prefecture and interacted (exchanged opinions) with the refugees from Ukraine who have been evicted from their home country because of the war and living in Beppu and Hita Cities.

In expressing his appreciation, Ambassador Sergiy Vladimirovich Korsunsky said, "I am grateful to the people of Oita Prefecture for understanding our pain. It is also unprecedented that the government and the private sector are working together to create a scheme for us to receive support. Thank you very much."

Co-op Oita also provides various other types of support to refugees. For example, in April, in cooperation with the government, with which Co-op Oita has concluded a comprehensive partnership agreement, they provided bedding, furniture, food, and other items to the refugees.

The stores also provide food and daily necessities, with some products being introduced in the Ukrainian language.

Furthermore, in May, Ukrainian refugees (16 people from 4 households) were invited to the Co-op Beppu store for a Ukrainian food party. This exchange party was held to provide a time of relaxation for the refugees, who are still anxious about the situation in Ukraine and the state of the war, in addition to the fact that some of them may be unfamiliar with leaving their home country.

Some comments from the participants include:
"It feels like a Ukrainian family, it's nice and quiet here," "It's fun. It's as if it's my birthday" and "I'm glad to have Ukrainian food for the first time in a month and a half."

Besides, as economic support, fund-raising activities are conducted among co-op members through the stores and home delivery outlets. A total of 14,731,968 yen was donated to UNICEF between March 14 and July 29, 2022. In addition, donations for those evacuated to Oita Prefecture (May 9-13) totalled 1,876,807 yen, which were delivered to the respective households of the refugees.
