The Shizuoka Promotion Committee for the Hibakusha Appeal held the 1st anniversary general meeting

The Shizuoka Promotion Committee for the Hibakusha Appeal held the 1st anniversary general meeting and commemorative lecture on May 11, 2019, and 92 people participated.

Upon the request of "Shizuoka Prefecture Atomic Bomb Victims' Association, Mr. INAGAKI Shigehiko, President of Shizuoka Consumers' Co-operative Union co-founded “The Shizuoka Promotion Committee for the Hibakusha Appeal”, and since after the formation of the committee, Shizuoka Consumers’ Co-operative Union has been serving as one of the secretariat organizations.

At the beginning of the general meeting, an opening remarks was given by Mr. YAMATO Tadao, Chairman of Shizuoka Prefecture Atomic Bomb Victims' Association.

It was followed by a commemorative lecture "It’s possible to eliminate nuclear weapons" by Mr. KAWASAKI Akira, International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

In May 2019, the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the 2020 NPT Review Conference was held at the UN Headquarters and Mr. KAWASAKI reported the current status of the international movement on the abolition of nuclear weapons and the collection of 9.41 million signatures by Hibakusha Appeal. In addition, he stated that there were international visits and dialogues by ICAN as well as joint collaborations with the Japanese A-bomb and global nuclear test survivors. Mr. KAWASAKI argued that getting out of the notion that war could be avoided because there were nuclear weapons would lead to the realization of a peaceful world.

Subsequently, the second general meeting of the Shizuoka Promotion Committee for the Hibakusha Appeal was held. The activity report of the first year was given, highlighting on the preparation of signature sheets, banner-flags and the issuing of a newsletter. It was also mentioned that street signature collection was made on the 7th of every month starting from November 2018 by each of the secretariat organizations resulting in a total of 47,820 signatures being collected in the year.

Also, as a plan for future activities, it was proposed that signatures of prefectural governors and local mayors be solicited, celebrities and experts be asked to cooperate with the making of posters and to continue working on the street signatures on the 7th of every month. The target number of signatures this year is 300,000.
