JCCU sets 2030 targets for renewable energy for future generation

2020.05.26

As part of efforts to realize a decarbonized society and a society that does not rely on nuclear power generation, JCCU, along with *12 consumer co-ops nationwide, has set a target to provide approximately 400 million kWh of renewable energy power supply annually by 2030. The estimated 400 million kWh annual power supply is about twice the amount of the current annual power generation. In addition, 40% of the estimated electricity consumption of all consumer co-ops in 2030 is equivalent to a CO2 reduction of about 150,000 tons.

JCCU and consumer co-ops nationwide aim to increase renewable energy through partnerships with local producers, business partners and local organizations

So far Consumer Co-ops have installed renewable energy power generation facilities, such as solar, wind, biomass, and small hydroelectric all over Japan, which in total can generate 180 million kWh of electricity annually. We will continue to place importance on the three elements "local communities," "cooperation and partnerships," and "sustainability" while promoting diverse renewable energy that can coexist with local communities, the environment, and the economy and contribute to regional development.

We aim at advancing initiatives toward 2030 as follows: First of all, we will install solar power generators to almost all our facilities such as co-op stores, home delivery and logistics centers and welfare facilities as well as the houses of co-op members and facilities of our business partners.
We will also continue to take on challenges such as biogas power generation using food residue, small hydroelectric power generation, and offshore wind power generation, etc. together with our producers, business partners, the local governments, social welfare corporations, civic and environmental groups who share the vision of creating a sustainable society.

JCCU and member co-ops aim to reduce greenhouse gases by 40% in 2030 and 90% in 2050 (compared to fiscal 2013). Currently, co-ops nationwide are formulating action plans.
