Special Study Session with WHO Headquarters on International Risk Assessment of Food Allergies

On September 16, 2025, the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union (JCCU) hosted a special study session (webinar*) on the international risk assessment of food allergies, featuring Dr. HASEGAWA Akio from the World Health Organization (WHO) headquarters as the guest speaker. The event provided a valuable opportunity for WHO to engage directly with Japanese stakeholders. Participants highly praised the session, noting that they "gained valuable insights into the efforts of international organisations" and that "even complex topics were presented clearly."

The webinar was held online, connecting in real time with WHO headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. Staff and members from 26 Co-ops nationwide participated. Dr. Hasegawa provided clear explanations of highly specialised content and responded thoughtfully to participants' questions, making it a highly informative and engaging session.

Latest Developments in International Food Allergy Countermeasures
The Department of Nutrition and Food Safety, to which Dr. Hasegawa belongs, collaborates with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to convene expert meetings during reviews of Codex standards*, providing scientific advice to the Codex Alimentarius Commission and Codex Committees. At this special study session, Dr. Hasegawa explained the outcomes of recent expert discussions on food allergies. 

*These international food standards, developed under the Codex Alimentarius, aim to protect consumer's health and ensure fair practices in the food trade.
