European Commissioner Michael McGrath Visits JCCU

On September 18, 2025, European Commissioner Michael McGrath, responsible for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection at the European Commission (EC), visited JCCU, accompanied by Thomas Gnocchi, Minister and Deputy Head of Delegation of the European Union to Japan. Commissioner McGrath held discussions with ARAI Chitose, President of JCCU, and other representatives. At the request of JCCU, SHODANREN (Consumer Japan), a nationwide network of consumer groups, also participated in the meeting.

The EC, as the "Guardian of the EU Treaties," represents and advances the interests of the entire European Union. Commissioner McGrath's visit to JCCU was part of his broader program of meetings with various institutions and organizations in Japan. During the meeting, the representatives exchanged views on consumer protection, responses to an aging society, and social policy.

Commissioner McGrath shared his impressions of the discussion, stating:
"In order to work with full commitment toward resolving challenges surrounding consumers, I hope to continue holding such opportunities for information exchange in the future."
