Supporting Indian Cotton Farmers and Their Children

The mail-order business of JCCU supports the "PEACE BY PEACE COTTON PROJECT" by donating a portion of the proceeds from products sold in the "Kurashi to Seikyo(Life and Co-op)" catalog. In FY2024, these donations were used to construct toilets and drinking water facilities at a school in India.

The "Kurashi to Seikyo" catalog, which features daily goods and clothing and is published by the mail-order division of JCCU, supports and sponsors the "PEACE BY PEACE COTTON PROJECT" initiated by textile trading company Yagi & Co., Ltd. This project collects donations through the sale of organic cotton yarn and products, which are then accumulated in a fund. The funds are used to support the transition to organic farming in India, provide employment assistance, and promote school enrollment, re-enrollment, and scholarships for the children of farmers. Since FY2022, JCCU has been donating a portion of sales from "Kurashi to Seikyo" products to the "PEACE BY PEACE COTTON PROJECT". To date, the project has provided approximately 500 books and educational materials to five schools in India.

In FY2024, a staff from the "Kurashi to Seikyo" team visited India to assess how donated items were being utilized at local schools and to listen to the schools' specific needs. During the visit, they witnessed firsthand the urgent lack of basic infrastructure, such as toilets and drinking water facilities. Recognizing that simply installing such facilities would not resolve the issue, since ongoing maintenance posed a significant challenge, the "Kurashi to Seikyo" division held repeated consultations with local stakeholders. As a result, a project to construct toilets and drinking water facilities at Saraswati Sishu Bidyamandir was launched during the fiscal year. These facilities were successfully completed in March 2025.

In rural India, attending school is not something that can be taken for granted. However, access to education can greatly expand children's future opportunities. That is why JCCU believes in transforming   schools into welcoming and appealing spaces that inspire children to want to attend. JCCU aims to foster children's motivation to study.

JCCU mail-order business will continue to support the "PEACE BY PEACE COTTON PROJECT" in FY2025.
