The United Nations has officially designated 2025 as the "International Year of Cooperatives" (IYC2025), under the theme "Cooperatives Build a Better World".
The "International Year of Cooperatives" was first celebrated in 2012, recognizing the important role cooperatives play in advancing socio-economic development, particularly in poverty reduction, job creation, and social inclusion. In light of these contributions, the United Nations has once again declared 2025 as the International Year of Cooperatives, dedicating the year to celebrating and promoting the cooperative movement worldwide, with a sense of expectation for the cooperative.
Cooperatives are member-driven organizations that unite individuals with shared aspirations to achieve common goals through collaborative business activities. These organizations prioritize democratic participation, with each member playing an essential role in decision-making and governance.
In Japan, consumer co-ops nationwide uphold the "2030 Vision of Japanese Consumer Co-ops," with the message of "Creating the Future with the Power of Connections." As organizations based on mutual aid, cooperatives work daily to build a more sustainable and inclusive society, ensuring a better quality of life for all.
JCCU serves as a member of the Japan Committee for the International Year of Co-operatives in 2025(IYC 2025 Japan Committee). Leveraging this global initiative, JCCU will collaborate with co-operatives nationwide to enhance public awareness and recognition of the cooperative movement. Furthermore, it will actively contribute to the realization of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by fostering more sustainable and vibrant communities.
