2025.01.15
JCCU member co-ops actively promote peace through initiatives led by their Co-op members. A notable example is the Peace Committee of Co-op Hiroshima, as introduced below.
On July 21, 2024, the Kure Peace Gathering: "Passing Down the Sorrow of 1945 - Never to be Forgotten" was held at the Hiro Community Development Center in Kure City. Organized by the Co-op Kure Peace Committee, composed of Co-op members from Co-op Hiroshima, the event attracted 76 participants, including members of a local choral group.
The event began with a screening of the video picture-story show Fū-chan no Sora (Fū-chan's Sky). This video featured Ms. Fusae Nakatao, a survivor of the 1945 air raids on Kure City, who shared her experiences through a traditional picture-story performance. Ms. Nakatao has devoted many years to preserving and conveying her wartime experiences through this medium. For this occasion, Co-op Hiroshima recorded her performance as a video.
Following this, members of the Peace Committee delivered a solemn historical reading, covering the period from the Battle of Okinawa--a ground battle fought between Japanese and U.S. forces on Okinawa Island from March to late June 1945 during the final stages of the Pacific War--to the enactment of the Japanese Constitution in 1946. Accompanied by background music, the reading included poignant testimonies from the Battle of Okinawa, letters written by kamikaze pilots involved in special attacks using explosive-laden aircraft, reflections from scientists who contributed to the development of the atomic bomb, firsthand accounts from survivors of the Hiroshima atomic bombing, and farewell messages from Japanese war criminals. The presentation concluded with a recitation of the Preamble to the Japanese Constitution, highlighting Japan's enduring commitment to peace.
Finally, members of Floral Chanté, a local chorus group from Kure City, performed uplifting songs that lightened the heavy hearts of the audience and brought warmth to the somber atmosphere, providing a moment of solace and reflection.
