JCCU holds the 74th Annual General Assembly

JCCU held the 74th Annual General Assembly on June 14, 2024, in Tokyo. Out of the 653 representatives, 366 attended in person, none by proxy, and 287 participated in writing, resulting in full attendance. All four bills, including the FY2023 business report, financial statements, and the FY2024 business plan and budget, were passed by a majority vote.

In his opening remarks, TSUCHIYA Toshio, President of JCCU, expressed condolences to the victims of the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake. He mentioned that during the earthquake, consumer co-ops nationwide and their members provided various forms of support, including disaster relief donations. He reaffirmed Japanese consumer co-ops' commitment to engaging in community-based activities alongside local residents during disasters, emphasizing the importance of collaboration with government and non-governmental organizations.

Regarding consumer co-ops' peace activities, amidst the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine entering its third year, continued conflict in Palestine's Gaza Strip, and ongoing missile launches by North Korea, the president underscored the importance of enhancing peace activities under the slogan "Peace and Better Life." He also highlighted JCCU's annual Peace Actions in Hiroshima, Okinawa, and Nagasaki, emphasizing JCCU's dedication to sustaining efforts that uphold the realities of war and promote nuclear disarmament among its members and society.

During the general discussion session, 15 representatives gave remarks about their co-ops, including initiatives towards achieving a decarbonized society. These initiatives involve procuring CO2-zero electricity from electricity companies utilizing chicken manure for biomass power generation,introducing EV trucks and accumulating their operating data, and working towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Other topics included reconstruction support activities for the 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake, Co-op members' "mutual help activities", symposiums on sanchoku, challenges in reforming Co-op's home delivery services, and improving labor environments to support a diverse workforce.
