On February 8, 2019, JCCU won the Excellence Award at Low Carbon Cup 2019.

The Low-Carbon Cup is a program for commending activities of various organizations, schools and companies for preventing global warming in an attempt to build a low-carbon society for the next generation. It was launched in fiscal 2010, with Japan Network for Climate Actions, a general incorporated association, playing a central role with the support of the Ministry of the Environment. Since 2016, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) has also been one of the sponsors.

The program shares know-how and information about excellent initiatives taking place across Japan and fosters cooperation and motivation for further activities.

This year 2019, 1,425 groups applied to demonstrate their initiatives and out of the 28 finalists selected JCCU was one of them. After presentations by the 28 finalists, JCCU won the Excellence Award and was given a commemorative shield.

This time, JCCU was evaluated based on two points. One is the proposed mid- and long-term greenhouse gas reduction targets for co-ops across Japan with ambitious numerical targets based on international standards of the Paris Agreement. Reduction target is set at 40% in 2030 and 90% in 2050 compared to 2013 levels. The other point is the making of manual and providing explanations to its member co-ops so that they could formulate reduction plans.
