Nationwide Consumer Co-op Members' Donations for Noto Peninsula Earthquake Exceed 1.6 Billion Yen

On January 1, 2024, a major earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 struck the Noto Peninsula in Ishikawa Prefecture, located on the Japan Sea side (east) of central Honshu. 

JCCU immediately called on its member co-ops nationwide  for donations to the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake Disaster Relief Fund (hereinafter referred to as the Disaster Relief Fund) starting from January 3, 2024. In response, member co-ops appealed to their members for donations.

As of June 24, 2024, the Disaster Relief Fund has reached 1,613,113,706 yen, including 3.35 million yen donated by the iCOOP Korea. The funds collected through member co-ops will be used as relief money (directly distributed to victims) and support funds (for activities in the disaster-affected areas), benefiting local governments in Ishikawa, Toyama, and Niigata Prefectures, as well as intermediary organizations providing assistance to victims.

as well as intermediary support organizations involved in victim assistance.

As of July 1, 2024, the Noto Peninsula earthquake has resulted in 281 confirmed deaths and over 2,000 evacuees in shelters (according to the Cabinet Office). JCCU will continue to support disaster victims with consumer co-ops nationwide and their members.
