JCCU launched "Co-op Sustainable Action" with co-ops nationwide on May 23, 2023."Co-op Sustainable Action" is an initiative to realize a sustainable world by increasing the number of people who "know," "learn," and "act" on environmental and social issues through five contents.

JCCU and co-ops nationwide have been working to achieve the five numerical targets set in the "Consumer Co-op 2030 Environmental Sustainability Policy". In addition to the previous efforts, the initiative is launched to fulfill the roles and responsibilities of a cooperative organization with approximately 30 million members.

Let's discover it! "Co-op Creature Hunting Quest"
June 1 to October 31, 2023
An event called QUEST was held within "Biome", an app for collecting plants and animals. As if playing a game, users post images of plants and animals they encounter. Those images are then displayed on a map. Data such as the time, location, and species name are collected which contribute to the study of climate change impacts as well as biodiversity conservation. This is a new initiative to expand the scope of environmental conservation activities that consumer co-ops have been conducting with their members for many years.

Progress of co-ops nationwide sustainability activities
The " Consumer Co-op 2030 Environmental Sustainability Policy," that Co-ops nationwide is working on, consists of 10 Action Guidelines, 5 Numerical Targets, and 18 Monitoring Indicators under the slogan "For the children of the future, a rich earth where all people can live humanly". The following is a summary of the five numerical targets achieved in FY2022.

Targets for greenhouse gas reduction and renewable energy development are well underway. Regarding the reduction of plastics, paper use, and food waste, the figures show they increased, partly due to an increase in supply since the targets were set.

In terms of the amount used (basic unit) to create a supply of 100 million yen, there is an overall trend of reduction.

The cooperation of co-op members is essential to realize these goals. Through Co-op Sustainable Action, we aim to achieve these goals by strengthening the sustainable efforts of all Co-op officials, staff, and co-op members nationwide.
