DX- CO・OP Project: Demonstration experiment of co-op member activities using digital tools to reach and retain young people

2022.07.19

JCCU announces the progress of the DX- CO・OP Project.

The DX-CO・OP Project is a cross-sectional initiative by JCCU, in collaboration with the Co-op Tohoku Sun Net Business Federation, the Co-opdeli Consumers' Co-operative Union, and the Tokai Co-op Business Federation, to realize a new lifestyle for co-op members.

Since April 2021, the three concepts and specific measures formulated to promote this project are been verified by the three federations. Based on the results of these verifications, the measures that would be confirmed to be successful for all consumer co-ops nationwide will gradually be introduced through JCCU.

  1.  Demonstration test of digital tools to expand connections among co-op members started

The traditional co-op member activities are held mainly on weekdays, using a room in the co-op store in the area, so it was difficult for those members who have little time or who are working to participate. The main method of inviting members to participate was by posting flyers in stores or distributing flyers through home delivery, which did not sufficiently inform members who obtain information from their smartphones or social networking services (SNS).

digital_tool_for_connections_among_co-op_members.pngIn order to expand co-op member activities in line with the coming era, we have started a demonstration experiment of a digital tool that will expand connections among co-op members.

This tool allows co-op members to participate in events of their own interest and convenience, to ask for small consultations related to their children and daily lives, to invite friends to participate in online and real-life projects, and to participate in a variety of other forms of activities, rather than the conventional member activities where they gather at the same time and place. Co-op members can now participate in a variety of activities.

  2. Nationwide expansion of "CO・OP chef,"  a web-based service that allows users to order from recipes, is underway

The " CO・OP chef" web service, which allows users to order ingredients used in recipes by tapping on their favorite recipes, was first launched by Miyagi Co-op, a member co-op of Co-op Tohoku Sun Net Business Federation (Co-op Tohoku), but at the end of May last year the service was introduced to all the six Co-op Tohoku member co-ops.

  3. Since then, the service has been extended to the Co-op CS Net Business Federation, the Co-op Hokuriku Business Federation, and the Tokai Co-op Business Federation.

Comments from users include, "It is very convenient to change the number of orders depending on the number of people," "It shows a list of necessary ingredients, so I can adjust my order while looking at what is in my refrigerator," and "The operation is easy to understand even if I am new to the site, and there are many menu suggestions, so I can use it even if I am not going to buy."

  4. The second experiment of AI-based delivery course optimization was conducted at Co-op Aichi to demonstrate the effectiveness of its implementation

Co-op Aichi conducted a second demonstration test of delivery course optimization using the AI solution "Loogia" from October 2021 to March 2022. AI enabled a more productive course design and verified whether it was effective in reducing delivery time and driving distance while actually checking the course. As a result, both "reduction in total operating hours" and "increase in the number of visits" were realized, demonstrating the effectiveness of the introduction of the system.

The verification will be continued with the aim of introducing the system in all consumer co-ops nationwide.
