The Co-opdeli Consumers' Co-operative Union has introduced shopping baskets made from reused PET bottle caps at its 20 member co-ops stores: Co-op Mirai, Co-op Nagano, and Co-op Gunma, starting in March 2022.

The shopping baskets being introduced were originally developed by Supermate Corporation, and each basket uses an equivalent of 97 recycled PET bottle caps (converted from weight), reducing raw plastic materials by 30% compared to conventional baskets.

The introduction of these shopping baskets is the first of its kind among co-ops nationwide, and has been introduced in 20 stores of the Co-opdeli Group.

Part of the PET bottle caps collected from co-op members at the Co-opdeli Group's home delivery service and stores are used as recycled raw materials for this project.

The Co-opdeli Group has been collecting PET bottle caps since 2012, and sells them as raw materials for recycling. The profits from the sale of the caps are donated to an authorized NPO, the Japan Committee, Vaccines for the World's Children (JCV).

JCV is engaged in activities to deliver vaccines and related equipment to children in developing countries, mainly in East Asia, to help protect their future.

A total of 486.11 million PET bottle caps (converted from weight) have been collected by FY2020, and the total donation to JCV amounted to 12,153,100 JPY.
