Business statistics of consumer co-ops FY2020

- Membership of consumer co-ops nationwide has increased for 12 consecutive years, reaching 29.98 million in FY2020, an increase of 370,000 from the previous year (101.3% year on year).
- Membership of community-based co-ops reached 23.04 million (101.7% compared to the previous year), but the COVID-19 disaster is not a direct factor in the increase in membership.
- The household subscription rate was 39.0% (up 0.7 percentage points from the previous year).
- The total business turnover (*1) of consumer co-ops nationwide was 3.8 trillion yen, an increase of 265 billion yen (107.5% year-on-year), while the net surplus (*2) also increased by 103.7 billion yen (274% year-on-year).
- The total business turnover of community-based consumer co-ops was 3.2 trillion yen (112% year-on-year), reaching the 3 trillion yen range for the first time, resulting in an increase in revenue for 8 consecutive years and an increase in the ordinary surplus of 101.4 billion yen (302% year-on-year).
- The total turnover of the home delivery business of community-based consumer co-ops increased for 10 consecutive years to 2.1 trillion yen (116% year-on-year), reaching the 2 trillion yen level for the first time. Out of this total, the turnover of individual home delivery continued to grow to 1.6 trillion yen (119% year-on-year).
- The total turnover of the store business was 948.9 billion yen (105.8% year on year), which increased for the first time in three years. The number of stores was 944, down by 14 stores from the previous year, and the sales floor area was 1.26 million m2 (98.0% year-on-year).
