Since 2018, the Co-op Deli Consumers' Co-operative Union (Co-op Deli) has been supporting mangrove tree planting activities in Tarakan, North Kalimantan Province, Indonesia, where black tiger shrimps are produced.
Shrimp farming has flourished in Indonesia and become one of the major industries. However, large-scale logging of mangroves for the expansion of shrimp ponds and agricultural land has caused problems such as environmental destruction and pollution. Co-op Deli had been promoting extensive aquaculture which has less impact on the environment, and in addition, has also started mangrove tree planting activity as an initiative for further conservation of the natural environment and sustainable aquaculture.
In this initiative, 3 yen from every pack of "Black Tiger with Shell" or "Prepared Black Tiger" purchased by a co-op member is donated to the "North Kalimantan Mangrove Fund". Using this fund, Co-op Deli donated 500 mangrove seedlings in 2018 and 3,000 in 2019. They received a certificate of appreciation from Mr. Shih Ho Chen, President of the North Kalimantan Mangrove Foundation for their efforts in 2019.
