Co-op Mirai, the largest primary co-op in Japan, with the membership of approximately 3.47 million (as of March 2019) operates its business in Chiba, Tokyo and Saitama. It has started home delivery using bicycles with a cargo trailer in a large housing complex.

There are several large housing complexes in the delivery area of Co-op Mirai. For example, in the Takashimadaira housing complex in Itabashi-ku, Tokyo, there are more than 10,000 housing units with 600 household members living there. In this area, 15 co-op staff delivered goods by delivery trucks 5 days a week, but there were some inefficiencies in using trucks. For example, because of few parking spaces the trucks could not enter the back side of the building and staff had to transfer items to a trolley and pull it to the designated place. This required many round trips to accomplish the task which was time consuming and tedious.

To overcome this situation, Co-op Mirai has employed bicycles with a cargo trailer that Osaka Palcoop has been using to deliver ordered items from a delivery relay point.
A delivery relay point is a place where ordered items are temporarily stored. In Takashimadaira housing complex, an empty store in a shopping center is being used as the relay point where products from the co-op's distribution center are temporarily stored, and subsequently carried by bicycle for delivery.
With a bicycle, a narrow road that trucks cannot enter is not a problem, thus reducing the effort of pulling a trolley, and delivering products faster. Furthermore, since it does not require gasoline, it contributes to CO2 reduction. No driver's license is required, so people without a driver's license can work as delivery staff.

In addition, co-op members who know that there is a relay point where they can meet co-op staff visit there when they have requests and sometimes offer sweets to the delivery staff. This opportunity paves a way to deepen interaction between co-op members and delivery staff.
