JCCU on June 12, 2020, held the 70th Annual General Assembly at its headquarters Coop Plaza in Tokyo. In order to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus infection, this year's General Assembly was held with the attendance of a limited number of people. Out of the 660 representatives to the General Assembly, 5 attended in person, no attendance by proxy, and 655 in writing. All the eight bills including the 2019 business and financial reports, the 2020 business plan, and the budget were passed by majority votes.
At the opening remarks, the President of JCCU, HONDA Eiichi, stated that the new coronavirus infectious disease has rapidly spread all over the world, and its widespread and serious effects are progressing, and expressed his appreciation to co-ops nationwide for striving every day to meet the expectations of co-op members, even in the face of unexpected situations. He further expressed the determination of the co-ops to work together to support the lives of co-op members and overcome the crisis. In addition, he mentioned that the 2030 vision of Japanese co-op, with the slogan "creating a future with the power that connects" takes the first step towards 10 years of new challenges and called on co-ops nationwide to strengthen solidarity and work to tackle the issues.
There was a debate session after the bill was proposed. 19 co-ops submitted documents and videos in advance, in which 6 delegates gave their remarks in return by video recordings. There was another remark on peace efforts by a co-op representative stating that 75 years have passed since the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and 50 years after the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons came into effect and expressed disappointment over the postponement of the '2020 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons' at UN Headquarters considering the activities being carried out nationwide such as the Hibakusha appeal, a signature campaign calling for an international treaty to ban and eliminate nuclear weapons. It was suggested that even if it was difficult for a large number of people to gather together under the spread of the new coronavirus infection, it would be necessary to find new ways to do the co-ops' peace activities and continue to disseminate them.
In addition, discussions were also held on a wide range of other topics, such as fund-raising activities in the event of disasters, supplies support, volunteer support activities, home delivery business renovation, and efforts to enhance community bonding beyond the boundaries of co-ops.
