Co-op Shiga takes over child-rearing support services of local government

Co-op Shiga has been entrusted with the provision of infant diapers from the local government as part of its child-rearing support program. Since 2016 and 2018 at Higashi-Omi City, Shiga Prefecture, and at Kora Town respectively, Co-op Shiga staff have been delivering hygiene products for infants as well as watching over child-rearing homes.
Today, the increase in the economic burden on the child-rearing generation and the weakening of ties with local communities due to the nuclearization of the family has become a social problem. Co-op Shiga aims to create an environment that is easy to raise children by reducing the economic burden on them and watching over them.
Co-op Shiga delivers diapers worth 1,500 yen once a month to Co-op members with infants under the age of one year who live in the target city until they turn one year old.
The delivery is done by female staff with extensive parenting experience who have been hired exclusively for the services.
In addition to delivering products, they also have a major role to play such as consulting about their child care needs, talking to them, and watching over them to relieve their worries about childcare. This overall can help alleviate the anxiety of postpartum childcare.
"I would be happy if parents who have difficulties in raising children would be relieved," says Ms.Yamori a delivery staff. Today, she continues to provide diapers and support services by a special dedicated car.
In this way, co-ops nationwide are implementing various original initiatives to support child-rearing, with the desire to increase the smiles of parenting families.
In the home delivery service, they don't only deliver food but also water, diapers, and toilet papers to the front door. For co-op members who have difficulty going out to store, the system offers discounts or free delivery and provides gifts that are useful for raising children.
There are various products that are convenient and useful for children's growth such as pureed vegetables. Some co-ops also have catalogs featuring baby products.
They hold "Childrearing saloon" nationwide, which is a space or playground created for little children and their parents for children's free activity and interchange as well as parent's spontaneous mutual learning and exchanges while watching their children play.
