Hokkaido Consumers' Co-operative Union provide subsidy for 'the Co-op 2018 Hokkaido earthquake volunteer support fund'

The 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake, which occurred on September 6, 2018, recorded a magnitude of 6.7 and a maximum seismic intensity of 7, killed 42 people, injured 775 people, totally destroyed 1,617 houses, partially destroyed 2,891 houses, and causing a large-scale damage to 16,736 buildings according to Hokkaido Prefecture’s investigation, as of February 8, 2019. Some of the victims still live in temporary housings.

The Hokkaido Consumers' Co-operative Union called for donations immediately after the earthquake. JCCU and member co-ops nationwide cooperated with this, and the total amount of donations raised by Hokkaido Consumers' Co-operative Union from 141 consumer co-ops and business federations has reached 365 million JPY (as of January 24, 2019).

Out of the 365 million, Hokkaido Consumers’ Co-operative Union donated 9 million to an Approved NPO Hokkaido NPO Fund to be used to support the disaster relief activities. The condition for the grant is limited to NPOs, school corporations, consumer co-ops, and volunteer groups based in Hokkaido which provide disaster recovery support and disaster victim support for the Hokkaido Eastern Iburi Earthquake.

The 2019 public offering period was from April 1 through 30 2019, with maximum subsidy of 5 million yen of which 0.5 to 1 million JPY will be allocated to 4 to 5 organizations and 100 thousand JPY to 10 organizations.

This initiative is scheduled to take place for three years up to fiscal 2020.
