On January 9 2019, 26 Vietnamese workers and their families took part in “The 1st Exchange Party for Vietnamese workers in U CO-OP” at Katakura store of U CO-OP. The participants cooked Vietnamese dishes using ingredients that were prepared at the U CO-OP store. They enjoyed the meal and conversation in Vietnamese language.
U CO-OP has been positive about employing foreign workers. The Co-op newly set up Diversity Promotion Group in their Human Resource Section to promote diversity in 2018. The group leader, Mr. Luu Van Thinh is also a foreign worker from Vietnam.
At present, 38 foreigners from 12 countries are working for the Co-op, of which 14 are Vietnamese (as of the end of December, 2018).
However, as they are allocated to various posts, sometimes a Vietnamese worker may be the only one at the workplace. In order to provide opportunities that those workers can talk in a relaxed mood about the problems they have in their daily life and at work, this exchange party was arranged.
- Comments of the Vietnamese participants:
- This is my first year in Japan. Since the Japanese workers always kindly answer my questions, I’m glad my Japanese speaking skill has been improving.
- After having worked at various places, now I feel the easiest and the most comfortable to work at U CO-OP and everyone is very kind here. It’s also fun to talk with Co-op members.
- I’ve never been back to Vietnam for several years, so I was happy to cook and eat Vietnamese food with my coworkers of U CO-OP.
This kind of exchange meeting will be held from now on too.
