2016 International Summit of Co-operatives Held

The 3rd International Summit of Cooperatives was held from 11-13 October 2016 in Quebec City Convention Centre Canada under the co-host of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) and the Desjardins (Canadian financial cooperative) under the theme "COOPERATIVES: THE POWER TO ACT".

It was participated by about 3,000 people from 115 countries including cooperatives, government officials, the business community, international organizations and experts in various fields. The discussions among stakeholders and participants focused on the challenges facing cooperatives and the mutuals, including the promotion of women and the youth participation and employment issues.

On October 11, the first day of the summit, a keynote speech was given by Nobel Laureate in Economics Joseph Stiglitz, a Professor of Columbia University, under the title "Inequalities: The Global Economic and Geopolitical situation."

On October 12, sectoral meetings were held including a panel discussion on wholesale and retail business under the title; "Increasing Our Capacity to Act on Our Competitiveness," in which the Vice President of JCCU, HONDA Eiichi took part as a panelist. HONDA gave a case example of the home delivery business peculiar to the Japanese Consumer Co-operatives regarding the sales method and the way of communication with the members are done using the omni-channel which is an internet platform of Co-op Kobe.
