UNICEF fund-raising activities
Since 1984, JCCU has been calling on consumer co-ops nationwide to participate in UNICEF activities as a campaign to protect children around the world and since then support activities have been conducted across the country. The total amount of UNICEF donations raised nationwide in FY2021 is approximately 460 million yen. The cumulative total exceeded 10 billion yen in April 2022.
“CO・OP × Red Cup Campaign”
JCCU and its member co-ops in cooperation with the Japan Association for the World Food Programme (JAWFP) have been working on the “CO・OP × Red Cup Campaign” since 2014 in order to raise funds to support the “School Meals Programme.” This is an activity to deliver school meals to children who have limited access to enough meals. This campaign started in 2014 and supported the Republic of Ghana and the Kingdom of Cambodia. Since 2020, JCCU has been providing support to the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. From October 1 to November 10, 2021, 4,378,061 yen was donated.
“CO・OP Core-non Smile School Project”
JCCU and its member co-ops in cooperation with the Japan Committee for UNICEF had launched a UNICEF donation campaign under the theme “CO・OP Core-non Smile School Project” to raise funds to help improve the educational environment for the school children in the Republic of Angola since 2010. The total amount raised from November 1, 2021 to October 31, 2022 was about 10.68 million yen.
Collaborating with local NPOs to support Nepal
Since 2012, Okayama Co-op has been continuously supporting the AMDA Social Development Organization, which is engaged in support activities for poverty reduction and health promotion in six countries. In February 2020, a delegation was dispatched to Nepal for a site visit, and in September 2020, a site visit report and exchange meeting was held online, where it was reported that various types of support are needed, such as the high neonatal mortality rate in the area.
Miyagi Co-op donates to the "Child-Friendly School" initiative of the African Association of Miyagi (AFAM)
A donation ceremony was held at the Miyagi Co-op head office, where former Miyagi Co-op Managing Director/CEO Mr. OHKOSHI Kenji presented Dr. Isaac ASIEDU, President of AFAM with 150,000 yen to support the "Child-Friendly School" initiative at SWESCO in the Republic of Ghana.
Children's cafeterias
Miyagi Co-op supports and collaborates with children's cafeterias based on their policies of “supporting children and child-rearing” and “playing a role in the social safety net.” The children's cafeteria is not only a place where local residents and organizations provide free or low-price meals for children, but also a place for office workers who return home late or families to interact with each other. Miyagi Co-op provides support for the groups that run children's cafeterias and those who want to start them up.
Food drive
Palsystem Chiba implemented a "food drive" initiative in which the co-op home delivery staff collected surplus food from co-op members at the time of delivery and supplied it to needy people, children's cafeterias, and welfare facilities via food banks. A total of 4,257 kg of food items were received from co-op members and donated to three food banks in the prefecture.
Food bank
Since 2016, Co-op Sapporo has been working on a food bank using returned products from home delivery services. Food items returned due to ordering errors, etc., that have no quality problems but have a shelf life of at least one month, are provided free of charge to child-care facilities in Hokkaido. This initiative not only provides food support to children, but also helps to reduce food loss.
Okayama Co-op donates sweets, rice, desserts, etc. to 11 children's homes
"Niji-no-Kai," a voluntary association formed by Okayama Co-op and its business partners, donated sweets, rice, desserts, and other items to 11 children's homes in Okayama Prefecture.
