Palsystem Consumers' Co-operative Union grants scholarship to two new students

2020.05.21

Palsystem Consumers' Co-operative Union established the Palsystem Benefit Scholarship in January 2020 and subsequently granted scholarships to two university students who are in financial difficulties. In addition to providing scholarships to young people in financial difficulties, Palsystem also aims to provide "accompaniment-based support" for the independent living of young people through life consultations and providing them with social experiences.
"Accompaniment-based support" is the kind of one-on-one support provided by individuals or groups to persons who aim for social rehabilitation and life reconstruction.
Fiscal 2020, marks the second year of the model project. Palsystem has given scholarships to two new students and started paying their tuition monthly from April. The four scholarship students were recommended by Palsystem specified accompaniment-based support organization that supports student living.

The features of "accompaniment-based support" with the community
The Palsystem Scholarship benefit is a tuition grant system that provides comprehensive support to young people who have difficulties in going on to higher education due to financial reasons. An allowance of 40,000 yen is paid every month to each student until they graduate.
The support is not only limited to providing a scholarship but also includes support such as life consultation and mental health care. Palsystem staff meets with scholarship students once a month to discuss their welfare and career issues.
In addition, Palsystem supports the students in preparation for their future independence by allowing them to participate in volunteer and farming activities organized by Palsystem at least once a year and experiencing these activities.

Reviewing a support system in which co-op members can participate
In the future, in order to expand the number of students who can be supported, Palsystem will develop a system to allow more co-op members to participate in the support such as donations.
In addition, Palsystem will consider building a more comprehensive support system while deepening cooperation with local support groups.
